A rotary laser level spins a laser beam to project a full 360° level plane across a site, so one person can set and check heights for slabs, formwork, footings, landscaping, drainage, fencing and earthworks. Outdoors the beam is picked up by a laser receiver, which shows when you are on level and lets the laser work across hundreds of metres. Below are our top 5 rotary laser levels and top 3 rotary laser receivers, picked from the current range we stock and the models our customers buy most, with the specs that matter side by side.

Which rotary laser level should I buy?
Most popular rotary laser: geo-FENNEL FL 105H
The geo-FENNEL FL 105H is the rotary laser our customers buy most. It is a self-levelling horizontal laser with three buttons, accurate to ±1.0 mm at 10 m, with a working range of up to 600 m diameter with a receiver and IP65 dust and water protection. The TILT alarm warns and stops the laser if the tripod is knocked out of level, while VWS (Vibration-Wind-Security) keeps it running through light wind and ground vibration. It suits builders, concreters and landscapers who need reliable heights for slabs, footings and site levels, and it comes as a kit with your choice of FR 50, FR 60-MM or FR 80-MM receiver, or the Onyx Omni 60.
Simplest setup: geo-FENNEL Roneo
The geo-FENNEL Roneo® is the newest horizontal rotary laser in the geo-FENNEL range and the easiest to use: set it up, switch it on and it self-levels, with geo-FENNEL describing its self-levelling as the fastest on the market. It is accurate to ±1.0 mm at 10 m, works across 500 m diameter with the FR 50 or FR 60-MM receiver, and runs 10 hours on a Li-Ion battery charged by USB-C. A compensator lock protects it in transport, and the Maxi Set adds an FS 9 crank tripod and a 2 m levelling staff in a toolbox, so everything needed for height work comes in one kit.
One-button operation: Leica Rugby 610
The Leica Rugby 610 is built around a single button, so there is nothing to set up or learn. It self-levels over ±5°, is accurate to ±2.2 mm at 30 m, and works up to 800 m diameter with the Rod Eye 120 receiver or 1,100 m with the Rod Eye 140 or 160. It is sealed to IP67, so it is dust-tight and survives immersion in water, and it runs up to 40 hours on Li-Ion or 60 hours on alkaline batteries. Leica covers it under its PROTECT warranty. It is also available as the Rugby 610 Pro Pack with the Rod Eye 160 digital receiver.
Long range and high accuracy: geo-FENNEL FL 115H
The geo-FENNEL FL 115H is geo-FENNEL's premium horizontal laser, accurate to ±0.5 mm at 10 m with a working range of up to 1,200 m diameter. It adds manual slope in both axes (±5°, ±9%) for drainage and falls, an IR remote control with 100 m range, an electronic beam screen to block the laser in chosen directions, and IP66 protection. It runs 26 hours on its Li-Ion battery, with an alkaline battery case as a backup.
Slopes and dual grade: geo-FENNEL FL 155H-G
The geo-FENNEL FL 155H-G is the entry point to digital grade lasers. You enter the grade for each axis on the laser or the 2-way RF remote, up to ±10% in X and Y (±14% combined), and the laser monitors the grade so it stays true. It is accurate to ±0.5 mm at 10 m, self-levels over ±6°, works up to 1,200 m diameter, and runs 30 hours on Li-Ion. Zonal control masks the beam to stop interference with other lasers on site. It suits civil contractors, drainage, car parks, sports fields and anywhere a set fall is needed.
Top 3 Rotary Laser Receivers
A rotary laser is almost always used with a receiver (also called a laser detector or laserometer), because the beam is hard to see outdoors and over long distances. Mount the receiver on a levelling staff, and it beeps and shows on screen whether you are above, below or on the laser plane. A digital millimetre readout shows exactly how far you are from level, so you can read heights without moving the clamp.

The Onyx Omni 60 is the receiver we sell most. It works with red and green beams from both rotary and line lasers, with a 0.5 mm digital readout, so one receiver covers every laser on site. The geo-FENNEL FR 80-MM is the match for geo-FENNEL rotary lasers such as the FL 105H, FL 115H and FL 155H-G: it has an extra-long 120 mm receiving window, five accuracy settings down to ±0.5 mm, a user-defined zero offset and IP67 protection. The Spectra Precision HL700 is a heavy-duty receiver for red-beam rotary lasers, with a 127 mm reception height, a digital readout of distance from grade, a working radius of up to 460 m, IP67 protection and a 3 m drop rating onto concrete. For Leica Rugby lasers, the Leica Rod Eye 160 adds a digital readout with accuracies from ±0.5 mm.

Rotary Laser Level Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best rotary laser level in Australia?
It depends on the job. For general site levelling, the geo-FENNEL FL 105H is our most popular rotary laser. For the simplest setup, choose the geo-FENNEL Roneo, and for one-button operation with Leica's IP67 build, the Leica Rugby 610. For long range and ±0.5 mm at 10 m accuracy, choose the geo-FENNEL FL 115H, and for slopes and falls, the geo-FENNEL FL 155H-G dual grade laser.
How much does a rotary laser level cost?
Rotary lasers are usually sold as a kit with a receiver. For a budget of around $1,000 to $1,250, the geo-FENNEL Roneo is the entry-level choice, including the Maxi Set with a tripod and staff. Around $1,250 to $1,500 buys the geo-FENNEL FL 105H with a receiver, our most popular rotary laser, and around $1,500 to $2,000 buys the Leica Rugby 610 or geo-FENNEL FL 115H. Digital grade starts at around $2,000 to $2,500 with the geo-FENNEL FL 155H-G, and dual grade lasers from Leica, geo-FENNEL, Spectra Precision and Topcon suit a budget of around $3,500 to $8,000. A second or replacement receiver suits a budget of around $200 to $750.
Do I need a receiver with a rotary laser?
For outdoor work, yes. Sunlight makes the laser beam hard or impossible to see, and the receiver detects it electronically. The receiver also sets the working range: the same laser can reach a few hundred metres or more than a kilometre in diameter depending on the receiver used. Indoors, the beam can often be seen without a receiver over short distances.
What is the difference between horizontal, slope and dual grade lasers?
A horizontal rotary laser projects a level plane for heights, slabs and footings. Manual slope lets you tilt that plane by hand for a fall, as on the geo-FENNEL FL 115H. A dual grade laser lets you enter an exact grade in percent for both axes and holds it electronically, which is needed for drainage, car parks, roads and sports fields. Horizontal and vertical (H/V) lasers can also be laid on their side for vertical alignment and plumbing work.
How is rotary laser accuracy measured?
Accuracy is how far the laser plane can deviate from true level over a set distance. Manufacturers quote it per 10 m or per 30 m: ±1.0 mm at 10 m is the same as ±3.0 mm at 30 m, and ±2.2 mm at 30 m is about ±0.7 mm at 10 m. For concrete and civil work, look for ±1.0 mm at 10 m or better.
What does the IP rating mean on a rotary laser?
The IP rating shows how well the laser is sealed against dust and water. IP65 protects against dust and water jets, IP66 against powerful water jets, and IP67 against dust and temporary immersion in water. For outdoor site work, IP65 or higher is the usual choice.
Should I buy a rotary laser or a line laser?
Buy a rotary laser for outdoor work and long distances, such as site levels, concreting, landscaping and earthworks, because it works with a receiver across hundreds of metres. For interior fit-out, cabinetry, tiling and ceilings, a cross line or multi-line laser is usually easier and better value. See our cross line and multi-line laser level buying guide.
